Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced a plan he said was initiated in the wake of a deadly vehicle attack in the French City of nice last year.

Australia has released the plan to protect public places from terrorism following an attack in Barcelona in which a van ran down pedestrians in the crowded Las Ramblas thoroughfare, killing 13 and injuring more than 100 people.

Turnbull said the plan was designed for councils, businesses and other venues operators and would also seek to protect the public from offenders using guns, knives, bombs or chemical devices.

The counter-terrorism strategy is publicly available online and outlines recommendations such as the installation of bollards around main streets, shopping centres and sporting grounds.
